Thomas Webster was born in London in 1800 and became an eminent painter of genre scenes and portraits.

Inspired by the work of seventeenth century Flemish art, many of Webster’s greatest works depict intimate scenes of everyday life; including children at play, musicians practising and general village activities.

At the beginning of his career he was interested in music but he decided in 1820 to enter the Royal Academy schools. He later exhibited at the Academy between 1823 and 1879 and became a full member in 1840.

Webster died at Cranbrook in 1886.
