About the Artist:
Ramsey Richard Reinagle was born in 1775 and made a living as a highly successful painter of animals and landscapes in water-colour.
His father and tutor was the eminent artist Philip Reinagle and he completed his education in Italy and in Holland.
He began to exhibit at The Royal Academy in 1788 at the age of only thirteen and showed 244 works there during his lifetime. However, he also exhibited at Royal Water-Colour Society, of which he was a member between 1806 and 1813. He became a full member of the Royal Academy in 1821.
Reinagle’s career was terminated by a scandal in 1848, when he was accused of exhibiting a work by another artist under his own name. The blow to his reputation which this entailed forced him to borrow money from colleagues, although he did continue to exhibit until 1857.
Reinagle died in 1862.
