Countless honeymooners and would-be lovers have explored the city in its famous gondolas, guided by a gondolier who has no doubt taken them down the Grand Canal, where they will pass underneath the Rialto Bridge in the heart of Venice. The Rialto Bridge was built in just three years, between 1588 and 1591, and for the next two centuries was the only way to cross the Grand Canal on foot. This massive structure was built on some 12,000 wooden pilings that still support the bridge, more than 400 years later. It has three walkways - two along the outer balustrades, and a wider central walkway leading between two rows of small shops, as Kondakova depicts here, that sell jewelry, Murango glass, and other items of interest to strolling tourists. Rialto Bridge at Sunset highlights Liudmila Kondakova's renowned and masterful use of color and light in a shimmering snapshot of this famous landmark. Her precise brushstrokes, as always, add dimension and depth, and bring each beautiful architectural detail into perfect focus. This breathtaking image was chosen as the closing artwork for her book, A World of Enchantment, a beautiful full color monograph containing over 160 images of her published and original artwork.
