About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Ustad Mansur was the leading animal painter at the court of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir, the ruler of the Mughal Empire from 1605 until his death in 1627. During the reign of Jahangir, Mansur created his best works, which are now considered to be masterpieces in Persian art. Jahangir bestowed on the artist the title of Nadir-ul-Asar, meaning ‘Wonder of the Epoch’.

Jahangir was fascinated by the exotic, and commissioned his servant Muqarrab Khan to buy rarities from the Portuguese, who had established a colony in Goa on the west coast of India in the early sixteenth century. Mansur was therefore the first artist to paint both the Siberian crane and the dodo.
