About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Edward Lear, born in 1812, was a topographical watercolorist and is one of the best known watercolour painters of the 19th century. He also painted some landscapes in oils but is perhaps best known today as an illustrator and author, particularly for his famous The Book of Nonsense and for the rhymes and verses which made up a significant part of this.

Lear was the youngest of 21 children and was brought up in London. At the age of 19 he joined the Zoological Gardens as a draughtsman and he published "Family of the Psittacidae", which was one of the earliest collections of coloured ornithological drawings made in England and which was published for the Earl of Derby. Whilst he was working for the Earl of Derby, he met many aristocratic patrons and even gave drawing lessons to Queen Victoria in 1846.

For the rest of his life he travelled extensively, particularly in Europe, and he eventually settled in San Remo in Northern Italy, where he died in 1888.

Lear exhibited between 1850 and 1873 at the Royal Academy and was a prolific, extremely successful painter. He died in 1888.
