About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Encouraged by Augustus John, Christopher Wood left England at the age of twenty to study painting in Paris, where he met the pre-eminent artists of the day including Picasso.

Wood returned to England in the late 1920s and visited St. Ives in Cornwall with Ben and Winifred Nicholson. He produced some of his best work at this time of which China Dogs in a St Ives Window is a particularly fine example. Whilst in St. Ives he discovered the naive artist Alfred Wallis, who was to become a major influence on his and Ben Nicholson's work.

Wood committed suicide in 1930 at the age of only thirty by throwing himself in front of a train, thus terminating an exceptionally promising career. His close friend and admirer Ben Nicholson went on to become one of Britain's most famous and respected artists.

Christopher Wood's work is held in many major private and public collections, including the Tate Gallery. Two books have recently been published about his work which have added to his ever-increasing reputation: 'The Fatal Englishman' by Sebastian Faulks (1996) and 'Christopher Wood' by Richard Ingleby (1995).

A retrospective exhibition of Wood's work at The Tate Gallery, St.Ives in 1997 included the original painting of 'China Dogs in St Ives Window'.
