About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Jean Francois Millet was a French painter born in 1814. Growing up, he learned Latin, literature and biblical stories from village priests, which would later influence some of his paintings.

Aged 19, Millet moved to Cherbourg to study painting. He exhibited successfully at the Paris salons, with one artwork being purchased by the government in 1848. Millet grew as an established artist, working on commissions and solo exhibitions.

His work is best known for scenes of farmers at work, painted in a romantic yet realist style. His religious artwork was occasionally met with conflict, however Millet maintained a strong reputation and went on to become one of the founders of the Barbizon School.
