About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Telemaco Signorini was an Italian artist born in 1835. He spent his childhood in Florence and became interested in the arts at a young age. This was encouraged by his father, who was a painter for the Royal Court.

He began painting landscapes ‘en plein air’ during his studies at the Florentine Academy. This led him to meeting a group of Tuscan artists, who later became known as the Macchiaioli group.

The Macchiaioli were interested in the qualities of natural light, shade and colour. They were forerunners of the Impressionist movement in France. Signorini travelled to Paris in 1861, meeting Edgar Degas, who became a lifelong friend.

Signorini volunteered as a soldier in the Second Italian War of Independence, subsequently exhibiting paintings of military scenes.

On his return, he travelled to London and Edinburgh, where his work was well received. Alongside painting, Signorini was a passionate art critic and was regularly published in Italian art journals.

He later began teaching at the Instituto Superiore di Belle Arti in Florence. His own painting style evolved over time, with varied influences including photography, Japanese art, and the work of Whistler.
