About the Artist:
Manet was born in 1832 and died in 1883. He was one of the first 19th Century artists to paint modern life and thus a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism.
His early masterworks "The Luncheon on the Grass" and "Olympia", both painted in 1863, caused great controversy and they are considered watershed paintings that mark the genesis of modern art.
Manet was born to an affluent and well connected family and his Uncle, Edmond Fournier, gave him a great deal of encouragement.
His proximity to and the time spent in the Louvre was a great influence on him, as was his travels throughout Europe and to Brazil.
Manet was a close friend of Degas, Monet, Renoir, Sisley, Cézanne and Pissarro and especially of Berthe Morisot, who is credited with convincing Manet to attempt plein air painting.
Manet married Suzanne Leenhoff in 1863 and his wife featured in a number of his paintings.
In his later years, Manet suffered from rheumatism and syphilis and is buried in the Passy Cemetery in Paris.
