About the Artist:
Helene Schjerfbeck was a Finnish painter born in 1862. As a young artist, Schjerfbeck left her home country for England. Settling in the artistic hub of St Ives in Cornwall, she found creative community and connection.
Her abstracted, highly stylised artwork includes portraits, landscapes and still-life. Her fascination with the concept of ageing is also explored through self-portraiture.
The timeless and minimalist quality of Schjerfbeck’s work gives her paintings a strong modern-day relevance. The soft brushwork and ethereal use of colour hint at both her Scandinavian heritage and subtle Cornish influences.
