About the Artist:

Leon Bakst was a Russian painter and scene and costume designer of Belarussian origin. He was a member of the Diaghilev Circle and the Ballets Russes for which he designed exotic, richly coloured sets and costumes. He designed the décor for a wide variety of productions including `Spectre de la Rose`, `The Sleeping Princess`, `Daphnis and Chloe` and `Carnaval`. His real name was Lev Samoylovich Rosenberg. Bakst had a very strong influence on fashion and interior design and he started his career as an illustrator for magazines and children’s books. He numbered amongst his friends, Anna Pavlova and Ida Rubinstein who both formed their own ballet companies.
