About the Artist:
Born in 1852, Edwin Austin Abbey was an American illustrator and muralist. He trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he began illustrating the magazine Harper’s Weekly. In addition to this, Abbey completed book illustration commissions, such as the works of William Shakespeare.
After his studies, Abbey moved to England. In 1898, he became a member of the Royal Academy. Soon after, his strong reputation and continued success led him to his grandest commission. In 1902, he painted the coronation of King Edward VII at Westminster Abbey.
The masterful depiction of light and shadow is Abbey’s trademark. His sheer skill and confidence shines through in his artwork, with finished pieces retaining a charming sketch-like quality.
