About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Philip Blacker was a successful National Hunt jockey who rode professionally for 13 years and won 340 races before retiring from the saddle in 1982 in order to concentrate on a full-time career in sculpture. During his equestrian career he developed a growing interest in sculpture, which came to fruition by chance. One day he was being driven to the races by a trainer and his fellow passenger in the car was sculptor Margot Dent, a former pupil of John Skeaping. Dent encouraged Blacker to pursue his interests in sculpture and thereafter he spent many days during the closed season at Dent's farm in Hampshire, where he learnt basic sculptural techniques which inspired an enthusiasm that remains to this day.

During his artistic career, Blacker has been commissioned by some of the most well-known names in the business and racing world including H.R.H The Prince of Wales, H.R.H Prince Fahd Bin Salman, The Machioness of Tavistock, The Marquess of Hartington, The Earl of Halifax, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Mr Peter O'Sullevan CBE, The Coolmore Stud, and Mr Stanley Clarke CBE.

Blacker’s commissions have included some of the world’s best-loved horses such as Northern Dancer, Persian Punch, Galileo, Generous, Danehill, Desert Orchid, Red Rum, Be Friendly and Bosra Sham amongst others.

It is without doubt that Blacker’s previous experience as a professional jockey has enabled him to bring a fresh approach and authenticity to his sculptural work.
