About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

The publisher Henry Bradbury was born in 1831 and was one of the most important 19th century printers of books and plates depicting the natural world.

Henry Bradbury was the son of William Bradbury, the founder of the publishing house Bradbury & Evans. He studied at the Imperial Printing Office in Vienna under the direction of the noted nature printer Alois Auer, who had introduced electro-plating to the printing world. Henry Bradbury brought some of Auer’s skills back to England (and subsequently was engaged in a lengthy dispute with Auer over who was responsible for further developing the process).

As well as nature printing, Bradbury also developed a number of other new techniques, including one to improve the secure printing of bank notes. Amongst the most famous books he printed was “The Ferns of Great Britain and Ireland” and, although he planned a number of other ambitious books on natural history, he committed suicide at the age of 29 in 1860.
