About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Born in London in 1806, this English painter of landscapes worked in water-colours with a vivid imagination. He died on Christmas Day in 1889.

William Wyld began his career as Secretary to the British Consul in Calais and soon became a friend of the highly influential artist Richard Parkes Bonington. Wyld travelled to Italy, Spain and Algeria with Horace Vernet, who was a celebrated painter of military and equine subjects. These journeys gave him the experience to publish the volume Travels in the Regions of Algeria, containing 50 lithographs by himself and F. Lessore. Also impressive were his Monuments and View of Paris, published in 1839, containing 20 lithographs.

Unusually for an English artist, and especially for one who executed so many water-colours, Wyld was extremely popular in France. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1839, was awarded the Third Medal in the same year and the Second Medal in 1841. In 1855 he was awarded the decoration of the Legion d'Honneur in recognition of the part he played in encouraging the art of water-colour painting in France, and around the same time became a Member of the New Water-colour Society of London. Whilst living in Paris, Wyld regularly sent water-colours for exhibition at the New Water-colour Society in London between 1849 and 1882. His works were also shown during that period at the Royal Academy and at Suffolk Street. During the early 1850s he spent a good deal of his time in England visiting the Great Exhibition of 1851 and staying at Balmoral with the Royal Family, who greatly admired his water-colour work. It is probably due to these Royal connections that Wyld only exhibited oil paintings in his native country between 1850 and 1855.

A contemporary critic wrote: "It will be remembered that Mr. Wyld is not a rustic landscape painter, but chiefly a painter of Continental cities. The kind of subject which best suits his genius includes palatial architecture, rich foliage and water seen in beautiful weather."
