About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

John Ferneley Snr (1782-1860) was born the son of a Leicestershire wheelwright, the youngest of six children.

Ferneley originally worked with his father, until by chance the Duke of Rutland saw some of his work on the side of a cart on which Ferneley and his father had been working. The Duke was so impressed with Ferneley he persuaded the lad's father to allow him to be tutored.

Ferneley received widespread commissions and his reputation grew. Between 1808 and 1811 he made frequent trips to Ireland, where he painted pictures for the gentry.

His best work was painted in the period of 1810 to 1850, when he displayed his full repertoire of hunting, racing and horse scenes.

Ferneley should be judged as a “Sporting Artist” whose remit was to reproduce in his work the likeness of the riders, their horses and hounds and to evolve the spirit of the sport with the skill of a craftsmen. To record the particular and transient rather than the universal, eternal and sublime of “High Art” at this, in his own time, he was undoubtedly successful.

In one of his hunt scurries one’s eyes look on with envy as each rider takes his own line across rolling pastures and over wire free hedges. Paradise revealed.

Over the subsequent two centuries Ferneley’s paintings have become invested with added value as historical records of the changing fashions and social conventions of the times.

A good proportion of Ferneley’s production is not of hunting at all but of country life, of portraits of local families, of days out shooting, of local fairs and markets, of racehorses and dogs. To all these subjects Ferneley brings the same confident qualities of observation and craftsmanship, seldom making a painting that falls below his own high standards. Without doubt he stands in the first rank of sporting artists alongside J. F. Herring senior, James Ward and Ben Marshall.
