About the Artist:

Samuel Lewis was a significant editor and publisher of topographical dictionaries and maps of the United Kingdom and Ireland. Samuel Lewis the Elder died in 1865 but he worked with his son, also called Samuel Lewis, who pre-deceased him in 1862.

Samuel Lewis’s most important publication was A Topographical Dictionary of England. The book was arranged alphabetically by place and provided a faithful description of every English area as it existed when the book was first published in 1831, indicating exactly where a parish was located in relation to the nearest town and including details about landowners, the diocese in which each area was situated, the Roman Catholic district in which the parish was located, together with historical and statistical descriptions. The book was well illustrated by maps of the different counties and significant towns, and there were six subsequent editions, the last of which was published in 1848-9 across four volumes, including an atlas.
