About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Little is known about George Willdey, who flourished as a mapmaker between 1695 and 1733.

He published a number of maps and atlases from offices that were known as the Great Toy Shop next to the Dogg Tavern, the corner of Ludgate Street near St Paul’s. At the shop he also sold other useful Curiosities including snuff, spectacles and globes.

Willdey was associated with Charles Price, another mapmaker whose work featured frequently in his atlases, but he is best known for his re-issue of Saxton’s Atlas of England and Wales, published for travellers rather than for libraries, which may explain why so few copies survive.

Saxton’s atlas was assembled from a survey of England and Wales between 1570 and 1574, from which a County Atlas was published in 1579 and a 20-sheet wall map of England and Wales in 1583. Saxton’s plates were amended by Philip Lea between 1689 and 1693, and it was these plates which were used by Willdey when his atlas, The Shires of England and Wales, was published in around 1730.
