About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Humphrey Lhuyd was born in 1527 and graduated from Oxford University. After studying medicine, he became a private physician to Lord Arundel, who was then a leading patron of education and the arts.

His position gave Lhuyd access to a library and to important geographical publications of the period. Inspired by his findings, Lhuyd decided to compile a series of up-to-date maps of Wales and the British Isles as well as publishing works on a wide range of other topics.

So successful was Lhuyd’s work that eventually his name was brought to the attention of the eminent Dutch cartographer, Ortelius, in Antwerp, who used the information Lhuyd provided for him in early editions of his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Although Lhuyd died before completing his own major work, his maps and notes were sent to Ortelius, who included many of them in the 1573 edition of his enormously influential atlas and in subsequent editions.
