About the Artist:

Julius Caesar Ibbetson, also known as Andrew Geddes, was born in 1759. While a teenager, Ibbetson was apprenticed to a boat painter and thus learnt to work on designs. When he was 17 he painted stage sets in Hull and York, before leaving for London in 1777 and starting to work on paintings.

He painted views of the London suburbs and, from 1785, exhibited at the Royal Academy. However, life was hard; traders paid him miserable prices and he could barely support his numerous children. Unproductive depression followed.

An invitation to sail to China reawakened his ardour for work, although the journey was aborted. He set to work and painted some accomplished pieces until descending again into a life of dissipation which lasted for some time. After a spell in Yorkshire in 1781, he settled down to work again and continued to paint productively for the rest of his life.
